It was a memorial bench, and this woman was probably the mother.

‘Oh, I’m so sorry,’ Ashleigh said truthfully as she scrambled to her feet. ‘I didn’t mean to interrupt your—’

‘Unimaginable and never-ending pain?’ The woman finished, her voice flat. Then she let out a sigh and patted the bench. ‘Please don’t go. Talking with people about anything other than my own existence is a relief. And it seems you sat here for a reason.’

Ashleigh swayed, not sure whether to accept or not, but the woman’s eyes were wide and she gave a slight nod of her head, as if encouraging Ashleigh to stay. With a sigh, she sat back down.

‘Do you live around here?’

‘Across the road at number eight.’

Ashleigh sucked in a breath. So she was local. Which meant she might be able to help. ‘This is going to sound weird, but I wanted to know if you’ve ever seen a woman coming or going from number twenty-two.’ As she spoke, she nodded in the direction of Liam’s house.

‘Ah.’ She nodded in understanding. ‘Were you dating?’

‘Not exactly,’ Ashleigh said, not wanting to lie more than she had to. ‘We were… I mean we are close,’ she corrected, since this woman wasn’t to know he was dead. ‘I get the feeling he’s seeing someone else.’

The woman gave her a pitying smile, which told Ashleigh Liam was probably seeing multiple women at once. Not so different from his high-school days in Herne Bay. Except no one ever tried to kill him then. Fresh tears stung her eyes, but Ashleigh pinched her arm to help stay calm.

‘He’s never spoken to me about his personal life,’ the woman said in a diplomatic voice, ‘but if you want my advice, don’t get serious. He seems like a lovely guy, but I’m not sure he’s ready for commitment.’

‘Thank you for your honesty,’ she said before licking her lips. ‘Have you seen any women recently? Could you describe any of them to me?’ It was a long shot, but if she could find out who the mysterious Cat was, or who the new woman in his life had been, she might be able to find out what really happened.

At this, the woman stiffened. ‘What’s this really about?’

‘It’s not what you think,’ she said quickly, but the woman raised an eyebrow to suggest she didn’t believe that for a minute. ‘Okay, it’s exactly what you think. But I don’t want to hurt them. I need to talk. To get closure.’

The woman’s lip trembled at the mention of closure, and Ashleigh winced. If Benjamin was her son, the grief was obviously still very raw. ‘I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.’

The woman’s hand fluttered to the plaque on the seat. ‘It’s his birthday tomorrow. He would’ve been twelve. We were meant to be taking him to the skate park. All of his friends were going to be there. It was going to be the party he remembered for the rest of his life. And now he’s gone.’ Her voice cracked and fresh tears streamed down her face.
